Most wedding photographers offer their couples an engagement shoot. Engagement photos might sound like something that isn’t super necessary, icing on the cake, a “nice to have”… but over the past couple of years, engagement photo sessions are quickly becoming a big favorite of mine. I believe there is so much value in these photos and I highly recommend them. Here are 3 big reasons why you should get engagement photos done!
1. Time in front of your wedding photographer’s camera
No doubt you’re a little nervous for your wedding photos, most people are. An easy way to calm those nerves is to get in front of the camera and break the ice BEFORE the wedding day. You will get a feel for how your photographer runs a session. Then on your wedding day your portraits will be a piece of cake. You’ll already know that they are going to ask you to pop your front knee or melt your shoulders, and you’ll know what they are talking about! This is especially true for the groom. It’s no surprise that men don’t normally get excited about portraits so having a familiar face behind the camera at the wedding will be incredibly comforting for both of you!
2. A chance to build on the relationship with your wedding photographer
You want your wedding photographer to be a friend by the time wedding day rolls around. Why? Because they are going to be with you in your dressing room! Even more importantly, they are going to be your eyes for you throughout the day, they will be capturing all of those moments you might miss! You want them to know you and your priorities well! Your photographer can best serve you when they know you really well!
3. This time is so special
I may be a bit biased, but I don’t think you can ever have too many professional photos of you and your honey! It is great to have non-wedding attired photos to document this extremely precious and fleeting time in your relationship. Think about it, out of all the years that you two are going to be together…your engagement is SO short!
Final thoughts
Engagement photos are much easier to control than wedding day portraits. You can intentionally schedule (and reschedule) the engagement session on a crystal clear day during golden hour (click here to learn what golden hour is). You cannot control what type of light will be on your wedding day! You have so much to gain by doing an Engagement Shoot!
I hope I’ve convinced you that you should definitely get your engagement photos done! Now, is a First Look for you? Find out here.
