As a Wedding Photographer, I have witnessed many weddings, all as unique as the couple who planned it. One of my favorite parts of the day is during the ceremony if the bride and the groom decide to write their own vows.
Writing your own vows lets the guests have a little peak into your relationship and makes the whole ceremony so much more personal. Writing your own vows is no easy task though. It takes a lot of intentional thought and time for both the future bride and the future groom.
To make things a bit easier I have complied my 3 top tips for writing your own vows!
1. Make 3 – 5 Promises
Make sure that you can keep them, no hyperboles. Avoid saying things like “I will treat you like a king every day of your life”, keep it realistic. For example maybe something like “I promise to respect and love you”.
Don’t be afraid to throw in one silly promise like “I promise to always kill the spider in the bathroom”. This will keep your guests totally engaged and will make your partner smile.
2. Tell a story
Let your guests into your special story. Maybe tell the story of how you knew it was forever or how you first met. Have it be heartwarming and a bit funny!
As you tell a familiar story you will see your partner relax and be less rattled with nerves!
3. Read it out loud to someone
Reading your vows out loud to someone before the ceremony ensures that you aren’t rambling. You want your vows to tell a complete thought but you don’t want to include a lot of unnecessary details. You want them to be short and sweet!
You also want to make sure your vows flow and that it comes across how you intend. You want to avoid too many inside jokes because you want your guests to be along for the journey, you don’t want to lose them.
You also want to make sure that you are super comfortable saying your vows, not memorized, but comfortable.
I hope these tips sparked some creative juices for you to get writing your own vows! Getting married soon? Don’t miss my top Advice for Brides!
